The Prayer Shawl Ministry’s started around the year 2010.
It does not seem like three years ago that Libby and I took the plunge, with Dale’s blessing to start a Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Faiths. We had no idea how it would take off and were prepared to go it alone if necessary. We had eight ladies at the first meeting and now we have 22 ladies making shawls, hankies and cards. We have gone from strength to strength both in the development of the groups and in the number of shawls we have given away well over 300 shawls!!
Shawls have been given locally as well as to all parts of the UK, and to Australia, America, Latvia, Germany, Uganda and New Zealand. We have had wonderful feedback from people who have received a shawl telling us of the comfort and strength they bring and the amazing feeling that someone they don’t know has made the shawl and is praying for them. One thing we had not been prepared for was the effect the ministry has had on the members of the group. It has brought friendship, love, support and a sense of belonging.
We sent 21 shawls to the clergy in Christchurch New Zealand who had been supporting the victims of the earth quakes. On receiving them the vicar organising things their end wrote-
‘Your wonderful shawls (and hankies) have arrived!!!! They are SO colourful, varied and all feel very personally crafted with love! It will be GREAT to give them out on Friday Nov 18th when we are all together in the Archdeaconry. Thank-you so very much!’
I heard from her again after the Shawls had been given out at the Archdeaconry dinner and she says-
‘everyone was quite humbled and touched by your special ministry and gifts to us all. Although we are now experiencing some quite warm weather, I still like to have contact with my beautiful shawl as I pray! Thank-you once again for this precious gift. The prayer hankies were also very much appreciated, together with the special cards on the shawls.'
The Rev. Helen Roud, Priest in charge at St. Chads, Christchurch.
A big thank you to all the ladies who made the shawls and also to members of the congregation who contributed to the cost of the postage. We have also sent a shawl to the lady bishop in Christchurch who has been struggling with the decisions that have had to be made about the Cathedral, as to whether it should be repaired or demolished and also to support her as she supports her flock. We will be celebrating our third birthday in January 2013 We welcome any new members who would like to join us, men or women. Don’t worry if you can’t knit we will soon teach you! If you would like a prayer shawl for someone who is bereaved, poorly or for a celebration or any other reason please contact Sarah Russell on 07538087202 or any member of the group.
Ring Sarah or check the church notices to find out the times of our meetings (which vary from week to week).
